Waterway220 viewsThe main street of Perge is actually a divided highway, with a 2-meter-wide water channel running down the middle.

Desecration219 viewsA rude, unwashed barbarian celebrates his triumphant, sacrilegious intrusion into the sacred precincts of the Nymphaeum, as one of his fellow-heathens looks on approvingly. (At least he didn't damage any of the precious artifacts; previous barbarians had done that.)

Kestros219 viewsA close shot of the recumbent river god, who as ever was too lazy to protect his shrine from the barbarian hordes.

Basilica217 viewsNext to the Hellenistic Gate is a Christian basilica, built in the 6th century AD.

Stoa217 viewsA covered walkway called a stoa surrounded the central courtyard and shops of the Agora.

Stoa and Acropolis214 viewsLooking down the stoa on the east side of the Agora toward the Acropolis, wtih some of the Byzantine-era ruins on top of it.

Ne'er-Do-Wells213 viewsA trio of barbarians, having pillaged the ancienty city, now lounges nonchalantly among the ruins.

Keep Clear the Ancienty City213 viewsAnother fun example of what happens when you fail to get a native speaker to proofread your signs.

View from the Window205 viewsThis picture was taken from the "window" at the top of the Nymphaeum. Water flowed from beneath the statue of Kestros down the channel in the middle of the main street to the city gate.

Nymphaeum205 viewsThe Nymphaeum was a monumental fountain, built in the second century AD, at the end of the colonnaded main street by the Acropolis.

The Hellenistic Gate203 viewsAfter entering through the Roman Gate, one comes to the Hellenistic gate, which dates back to the 3rd century BC. I don't know why the Romans thought the city needed another gate, especially because the Hellenistic Gate is the most imposing building of the city and was a formidable bulwark, far better suited to protect the city with its twin towers and its horseshoe-shaped courtyard at the back. The towers had three floors and were crowned by a conical roof.
