The Sun sets in the weeds698 viewsThe still-partially-eclipsed sun is being increasingly obscured by tree branches on a distant hillside - but they look more like weeds in this view.

The Old Mill698 viewsI don't know when this mill was built, most likely not more than a couple of centuries ago; but water wheels have been in use for grinding grain since Roman times.

Eclipse Projections698 viewsSomeone laid out a sheet on the pavement, with the aim of projecting onto it a sharp and well-defined image of the shadow of the Moon crossing the Sun.

The Beach at Totality698 viewsLooking out over the Mediterranean. Again, without a tripod Sandie's camera was subject to shaking, hence the blurred picture.

Lustration Urn698 viewsDavid Lindquist with his mascot bear Hero kneels next to one of two huge urns carved from single blocks of marble. They date from the Hellenistic era - 300 BC or so - but were brought here from Pergamon during the reign of Sultan Murad III (r. 1574-1595).

Southwestern Entrance Mosaic698 viewsDates from the reign of Emperor Basil II (976-1025). Depicts the Virgin Mary seated in the center with the Christ child on her lap, with Emperior Constantine on the right, presenting a model of the city of Constantinople, and Emperor Justinian on the left, presenting a model of Hagia Sophia.

Parquet Floor698 viewsDolmabace Palace was filled with intricate parquet floors, in places overlain with posh Turkish carpeting, as in this picture.
NGC6543-20160604.jpg
NGC 6543 - Cat's Eye Nebula698 viewsA structurally very complex planetary nebula about 3000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Draco. In large-telescope images it has the appearance of a cat's eye, but in my 5" refractor it appears simply as a bright blue star with a halo. The small spiral galaxy off to the left is probably NGC 6552.

The Real Mattox Residence698 viewsChuck and Elouise Mattox's exquisite house in Bend, Oregon. Note the weeping cedar tree just to the right of center - one of my favorite features of the property.
