Queen Anne District617 viewsThe northern section of Queen Anne, as seen across Union Lake from Kite Hill in the Gas Works Park. Queen Anne Hill and District take their name from the fact that many of the houses built in the late 19th and early 20th century were in the Queen Anne style, a variant of Victorian. (The name refers to the British queen who reigned from 1702 to 1714, though the style actually has nothing to do with her or her time.)

What is Lenin doing in Seattle?615 viewsThis 16-foot-tall, 7-ton statue of Lenin was created by a Bulgarian sculptor, Emil Venkov, in 1988 as part of an arts competition. It stood in Czechoslovakia but was toppled in the 1989 revolution and tossed in a junkyard, where it was found and purchased by an American, who brought it to the USA.

Flames and Guns611 viewsThe sculptural adjuncts surrounding Lenin are supposed to represent flames and guns. The sculptor did not intend this portrayal to be adulatory, but rather critical - he created it at the height of perestroika, just before the collapse of Communism, at a time when such expressions had become permissible.

Under the Spreading Mushroom Tree610 viewsA cute little dwarf mushroom tree nestles amongst the other greenery in the front yard. Actually, of course, I am lying and there is probably no such thing as a mushroom tree and if there is this isn't one. I forgot to ask our hosts what type of tree it really is.

Brutal Beetle604 viewsThis VW Beetle, made no earlier than 1957 as you can tell from the rear window, was made up to look like a German army weapons platform - not very convincingly; how would you aim and fire the machine gun on top?

Nile Shrine596 viewsI think this telephoto view looks toward the Nile Shrine Golf Course, which occupies the southeastern quadrant of the lake shore. It's hard to be sure since the view is obscured by trees and construction.

Popular Ogre596 viewsThe Fremont Troll is one of the most popular attractions in Seattle, and it was impossible to get a shot with no people in the picture without waiting for nightfall, and I didn't want to wait that long.
