M31 - The Andromeda Galaxy247 viewsA wide-field view of the Andromeda Galaxy, 2.5 million light years away and 152,000 light years in diameter. Satellite galaxies M32 (above right of center, on rim of M31) and M110 (bottom center) also appear in the frame. Red swath at left was caused by a reflection of the red power-on light on the ZWO ASI2600MC camera, which sits in front of the telescope.Nov 13, 2022
NGC281-20221021-RRGB4.jpg
NGC281 - PacMan Nebula, narrowband version223 viewsA narrowband version of the PacMan, obtained with a one-shot color CMOS camera and an IDAS NBZ nebula enhancement filter, with H-alpha mapped to red and O-III to blue.Nov 13, 2022
NGC1848-20221028-RRGB3.jpg
IC1848 - The Soul Nebula, narrowband version253 viewsNarrowband rendition of the Soul Nebula, captured using an IDAS NBZ nebula enhancement filter, with H-alpha emissions in red and O-III emissions in blue.Nov 13, 2022
NGC1805_20221025_RRGB4.jpg
IC1805 - The Heart Nebula, narrowband version224 viewsNarrowband rendition of the Heart Nebula, using the IDAS NBZ nebula enhancement filter to capture the H-alpha and O-III emissions; Fish Head Nebula seen as extension of Heart at lower left.Nov 13, 2022
IC405_20221026_RRGB2.jpg
IC405 - The Flaming Star Nebula in Auriga254 viewsNarrowband view of an emission and reflection nebula in the constellation Auriga north of the celestial equator, surrounding the bluish, irregular variable star AE Aurigae. About 1500 light-years away.Nov 13, 2022
NGC1499_20220828_RRBG2.jpg
NGC1499 - The California Nebula, narrowband version 228 viewsA more conventional narrowband rendition of the California Nebula, mapping H-alpha to gold and O-III to blueNov 13, 2022
NGC1499_20220828_NB3~1.jpg
NGC1499 - The California Nebula, narrowband version237 viewsThis bizarre rendition of the California Nebula was the result of an unrepeatable experiment in mapping H-alpha and O-III to various channels in a mad orgy of improvisation. Nov 13, 2022
M20_20220625_RGB2.jpg
M20 - The Trifid Nebula242 viewsA combination of an open cluster of stars, an emission nebula (the lower, red portion), a reflection nebula (the upper, blue portion) and a dark nebula (which accounts for the gaps dividing the nebula into lobes). About 5000 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius.Nov 13, 2022
M1-HOS-20201205-v3.jpg
M1 - The Crab Nebula, narrowband version234 viewsA Hubble palette rendition of the remnant of the supernova seen by Chinese astronomers in 1054 CE.Nov 13, 2022
NGC6302_20160624_LRGB2.jpg
NGC6302 - The Bug Nebula251 viewsA bipolar planetary nebula in the constellation Scorpius. Also known as the Butterfly Nebula, but a larger telescope than the 5" refractor used to capture this image is needed to show the pattern clearly; it shows up well in Hubble images. In this image, the nebula looks more like a bug squashed on a car windshield.Aug 07, 2022
NGC6888_20200621_LRGB2.jpg
NGC 6888 - The Crescent Nebula282 viewsAn emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus, about 5000 light-years away from Earth; formed by the fast stellar wind from the Wolf-Rayet star WR 136 colliding with and energizing slower-moving matter ejected by the star when it became a red giant around 250,000 to 400,000 years ago.Aug 07, 2022
NGC7000_20220726_DB1.jpg
NGC7000 - The North American Nebula248 viewsNarrowband image of an H-II emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus; only part of the nebula is visible since it is too large to fit entirely in the field of view of the telescope. 2,590 light-years distant and 90 light-years across.Aug 05, 2022
