First Contact plus 1 minute 28 seconds10 viewsThe nibble on the sun is a little larger.

Post-Totality 32 viewsThe Sun hits the horizon, about a quarter through post-totality.

IC1396A - Elephant Trunk Nebula 17 viewsA narrowband (Hubble Palette) image of a dense cloud of gas and dust within a much larger region of ionized gas designated IC1396, illuminated and ionized by the massive bright star HD206267 at the upper right corner of the frame. I don't find that the shape of the nebula resembles an elephant's trunk, but rather, as Michelle Evans has suggested, a dragon named Verminthrax Pejorative from the movie Dragonslayer.

First Contact plus 1 hour, 11 minutes5 viewsVenus plods its way along the top of the Sun's disk. (Not a mistake - these pictures are 180 degrees reversed from the visual view.)

NGC 6946 - Fireworks Galaxy and Friends7 viewsAn alternate view of the Fireworks Galaxy featuring a neighbor, the open star cluster NGC 6939, near the lower edge of the image.

NGC7635 - The Bubble Nebula - H-alpha enhanced version4 viewsAn emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia. The "bubble" is created by the stellar wind from a hot, massive star within a molecular cloud which contains the expansion of the bubble, preventing it from dissipating, and is also itself excited by the star. The nebula is 7 light years across and 7100 light-years away.

IC4592 - Blue Horsehead Nebula 11 viewsReflection nebula in the constellation Scorpius, lit by the giant septuple star Jabbah (Nu Scorpii). This photo shows only part of the nebula, so the horsehead shape is not evident here.

M11 - The Wild Duck Cluster5 viewsOne of the richest, most compact and most massive open clusters known; estimates range from 3,700 to 11,000 solar masses. Radius 95 light-years. 6,120 light-years away, in the constellation Scutum. Supposedly the cluster resembles a flying flock of ducks, although as far as I can tell it could just as well be geese, crows or magpies.

M108 and M97 in one frame2 viewsBarred spiral galaxy M108, nicknamed the Surfboard Galaxy, about 28 million light years away; and planetary nebula M97, the Owl Nebula, 2030 light-years away, both in Ursa Major.Nov 17, 2023

IC2118, the Witch Hunt Nebula2 viewsFaint reflection nebula in Eridanus, usually known as the Witch Head Nebula, but it doesn't look much like a witch's head in this view, shot with an IDAS NBZ nebula enhancement filter, so maybe this version is best titled the "Witch Hunt Nebula." About 900 light-years away; illuminated by the nearby supergiant blue-white star Rigel in Orion.Nov 17, 2023

Westerhout 5, The Soul Nebula1 viewsEmission nebula in Cassiopeia, 7500 light-years away. Also known as Sharpless 2-199, LBN 667 and IC 1848, although the last is properly the designation of a star cluster within the nebula. Eastern neighbor of the Heart Nebula.Nov 17, 2023

The Heart Nebula1 viewsEmission nebula in Cassiopeia, 7500 light-years away from Earth. The Fish-head Nebula is also seen as a cancerous outgrowth from the Heart Nebula at lower left.Nov 17, 2023

M77 and Friends2 viewsBarred spiral galaxy in Cetus (left side of picture), about 47 million light-years from Earth. A Type 2 Seyfert galaxy with an active nucleus. The spiral galaxy at right is NGC 1055. The spiral galaxy NGC1072 is also seen as a tiny oval near the bottom center of the frame.Nov 17, 2023

NGC 5907 - The Splinter Galaxy1 viewsAlso known as the Knife Edge Galaxy. About 50 million light-years from Earth. Located in the constellation Draco.Nov 17, 2023
