NGC7331-LRGB-PS-201701212049c.jpg
NGC 7331 - Spiral Galaxy in Pegasus13 viewsAbout 40 million light-years away; similar in size and structure to the Milky Way.
NGC891-20181106.jpg
NGC 891- Silver Sliver Galaxy10 viewsAn edge-on spiral galaxy in Andromeda; about 30 million light-years distant; similar in size to the Milky Way.
M33-20160930.jpg
M33 - The Triangulum Galaxy14 viewsAbout 3 million light-years away, this is the third-largest member of the Local Group, which includes M31 and the Milky Way.
M51-20130407c.jpg
M51- The Whirlpool Galaxy18 viewsThere are actually two interacting galaxies here; the smaller companion is NGC 5195, and the two have collided in the past, causing all kinds of woe and grief. They are about 25 million light years away.

Messier 81 and 8211 viewsThese two galaxies are found in the constellation Ursa Major and are about 12 million light-years away. The larger one, M81, is also known as Bode's Nebula; the smaller is known as the Cigar Galaxy, although it's a funny kind of cigar because it looks like it's lit in the center rather than at one end. Maybe it's an exploding cigar. Yes - that's it! It's a starburst galaxy, with an abnormally high rate of star formation in the center!
M63-20170429.jpg
Messier 63 - The Sunflower Galaxy12 viewsAt a distance of 37 million light-years in the constellation Canes Venatici, M63 is known as the Sunflower Galaxy because of its bright yellow core (not so obvious in this image). At 98,000 light-years diameter, in is similar in size to the Milky Way.
M100-20130511c.jpg
Messier 100 and companions11 viewsSpiral Galaxy in the constellation Coma Berenices. Surrounded by tiny satellite galaxies NGC 4323 and NGC 4328 (about 3 o'clock and 5:30). Larger spiral galaxy at top is NGC 4312.
M101-201704.jpg
Messier 101 - The Pinwheel Galaxy13 viewsFace-on spiral galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major. A colossus among galaxies, 170,000 light-years across (Milky Way is 105,700), with a trillion stars. Distance - approx. 25 million light-years from Earth.
M104-20150418.jpg
Messier 104 - The Sombrero Galaxy14 views28 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo, the Sombrero is one of the most spectacular of all galaxies.
M106-20170420.jpg
Messier 106 and companions10 viewsThe large spiral galaxy at left is M106, lying at a distance of 22 to 25 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Canes Venatici. A myriad of other galaxies are in the frame, of which the two most prominent are NGC 4248 (closest to M106) and NGC 4217 (disk at right).
NGC6946-20160830.jpg
NGC 6946 - The Fireworks Galaxy7 viewsA face-on spiral galaxy in the constellation Cepheus, near its border with Cygnus, about 1/3 to 1/2 as big as the Milky Way, but with a high rate of star formation, making it a spectacular starburst galaxy. About 25 million light-years from Earth and 40,000 light-years in diameter.
NGC6946-20160902.jpg
NGC 6946 - Fireworks Galaxy and Friends7 viewsAn alternate view of the Fireworks Galaxy featuring a neighbor, the open star cluster NGC 6939, near the lower edge of the image.
