Medusa Nebula (Sharpless 2-274)545 viewsPlanetary Nebula in Gemini. Discovered in 1955, first thought to be a supernova remnant, but Soviet astronomers in 1971 determined it to be a planetary nebula.

IC 1848 - The Soul Nebula542 viewsAn emission nebula in Cassiopeia, eastern neighbor of the Heart Nebula, IC 1805. About 6,500 light-years away, it spans 100 light-years, and is too big at that distance to fit into my telescope's field of view, so only part of it is seen here.

NGC 6992 - Eastern Veil Nebula542 viewsAlong with NGC 6960 and other objects, the Eastern Veil is a component of the Veil Nebula in the constellation Cygnus. It is a cloud of hot, ionized gas composed of oxygen, sulfur and hydrogen.

IC 4604 - Rho Ophiuchi Nebula 539 viewsA blue reflection nebula in Ophiuchus, illuminated by three bright stars of which the central and brightest is Rho Ophiuchi. Lying along the border of Ophiuchus and Scorpius, this nebula and its neighbor IC4603 are close to the giant red star Antares.

NGC 6543 - Cat's Eye Nebula538 viewsA structurally very complex planetary nebula about 3000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Draco. In large-telescope images it has the appearance of a cat's eye, but in my 5" refractor it appears simply as a bright blue star with a halo. The small spiral galaxy off to the left is probably NGC 6552.

IC1848 - The Soul Nebula, narrowband version538 viewsNarrowband rendition of the Soul Nebula, captured using an IDAS NBZ nebula enhancement filter, with H-alpha emissions in red and O-III emissions in blue.

M42 - The Great Nebula in Orion536 views1344 light-years away, 24 light-years across, this emission/reflection nebula is one of the brightest in the sky, as well as the closest region of massive star formation to Earth.

Sharpless2-313 - Planetary Nebula in Hydra535 viewsAbout 400 light-years away. Also known as Abell 35 or PN G303.6+40.0.

Sharpless 9 - Emission nebula in Scorpius534 viewsThere is also an area of reflection nebula (blue) around the star Sigma Scorpii, but the processing of this version doesn't reveal it very well. The globular cluster M4 is also in the field of view.

IC405 - The Flaming Star Nebula in Auriga532 viewsNarrowband view of an emission and reflection nebula in the constellation Auriga north of the celestial equator, surrounding the bluish, irregular variable star AE Aurigae. About 1500 light-years away.
