Markarian's Chain649 viewsPart of Markarian's Chain, a group of galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. Visible in the photo are NGCs 4477, 4473, 4461, 4458, 4438 and 4435. Not visible are M84 and M86, which are out of the frame to the right - my telescope's field of view is not big enough to capture them all.

NGC 6520 and Barnard 86647 viewsNGC 6520 is an open cluster in the constellation Sagittarius, consisting of about 25 stars of magnitude 9-12. At its western edge (to the right in this image) lies the dark nebula Barnard 86 (B86).

NGC 6888 - The Crescent Nebula645 viewsAn emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus, about 5000 light-years away from Earth; formed by the fast stellar wind from the Wolf-Rayet star WR 136 colliding with and energizing slower-moving matter ejected by the star when it became a red giant around 250,000 to 400,000 years ago.

Sharpless2-136, the Ghost Nebula643 viewsReflection nebula in Cepheus. 1470 light-years distant, near the cluster NGC 7023.

IC4603 - Core of the Rho Ophiuchi Complex642 viewsThis blue reflection nebula glows by the light of the 7.9 magnitude star SAO184376 in the center.

M11 - The Wild Duck Cluster636 viewsOne of the richest, most compact and most massive open clusters known; estimates range from 3,700 to 11,000 solar masses. Radius 95 light-years. 6,120 light-years away, in the constellation Scutum. Supposedly the cluster resembles a flying flock of ducks, although as far as I can tell it could just as well be geese, crows or magpies.

NGC 7009 - The Saturn Nebula635 viewsA planetary nebula in the constellation Aquarius, at a distance of about 5000 light-years, with a superficial resemblance to the planet Saturn. This image does not do it justice, because a much larger telescope is required to resolve the complex internal structure of the nebula.

M1 - The Crab Nebula, narrowband version635 viewsA Hubble palette rendition of the remnant of the supernova seen by Chinese astronomers in 1054 CE.

M45 - The Pleiades634 viewsOpen star cluster in the constellation Taurus. Nearest Messier object to Earth (444 light-years).
|
|

Sharpless2-27 - The Zeta Ophiuchi Nebula633 viewsLarge but very faint emission nebula centered on the star Zeta Ophiuchi. Difficult to image because of the brightness of the star relative to the faintness of the nebula..

NGC 253 - The Silver Dollar Galaxy632 viewsSpiral galaxy in the constellation Sculptor.

|

M97 - The Owl Nebula630 viewsPlanetary nebula in the constellation Ursa Major, 2030 light-years distance from Earth and about 8000 years old. The blurred appearance results from the fact that it consists of several overlapping shells of gas. The shells are not entirely concentric, but form a barrel-like structure which gives rise to the owl-like appearance.
