NGC 6207, Spiral Galaxy in Hercules595 viewsNGC 6207 is the small oval object on the right side of the photo, just below the centerline. It is seen nearly edge-on and is about 30 million light-years from Earth. It is somewhat outshone by M13, the large globular cluster on the left, which is of course much closer, at 22,200 light-years from Earth.

Dragon's Tooth594 viewsFourth Contact (end of post-totality partial phase) will occur at 8:34:23 local time, with the Sun well below the horizon.

IC2177 - The Parrot Nebula594 viewsUsually known as the Seagull Nebula, but to me it looks more like a parrot. An HII region lying along the border between Canis Major and Monoceros.

Messier 58 and the Siamese Twins593 viewsM58 is a barred spiral galaxy about 62 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo. The Siamese Twins, NGC 4567 and 4568, are colliding spiral galaxies about 60 million light-years away, in the early stages of merging; they are also nicknamed the Butterfly Galaxies.

NGC3521_LHARGB1.jpg
NGC 3521, "flocculent" spiral galaxy in Leo592 viewsNGC 3521 is termed a "flocculent" spiral galaxy because it has patches or clumps of stars breaking up the continuity of the spiral arms. Self-propagating star formation is thought to account for the patchiness. The galaxy lies about 26 million light-years away from us.

NGC281 - The Pac-Man Nebula592 viewsA bright emission nebula, part of an H II region in the constellation Cassiopeia; known as the Pac-Man Nebula because of its resemblance to the video game character that flits around ruthlessly and insatiably chomping up defenseless, pathetic little dots.

IC1805 - The Heart Nebula, narrowband version592 viewsNarrowband rendition of the Heart Nebula, using the IDAS NBZ nebula enhancement filter to capture the H-alpha and O-III emissions; Fish Head Nebula seen as extension of Heart at lower left.

Sharpless 9 - Emission nebula in Scorpius592 viewsThere is also an area of reflection nebula (blue) around the star Sigma Scorpii, but the processing of this version doesn't reveal it very well. The globular cluster M4 is also in the field of view.
