Sunspots672 viewsThe Sun in this early-pre-totality eyepiece-projection shot is too big to fit into the frame, but the sunspots do show up well.

First Contact669 viewsAt 12:39:58.1, local time, the Moon starts to encroach on the disk of the Sun. Since there is not much to say about partial phase eclipse images, I have captioned them with stanzas from Archibald Macleish's poem "You, Andrew Marvell" - a magical piece which best conveys the awe and wonder of the stunning natural spectacle we know as a total eclipse of the Sun - and, in the case of the post-totality shots, a few verses from other metaphysical works.

M20 - The Trifid Nebula664 viewsA combination of an open cluster of stars, an emission nebula (the lower, red portion), a reflection nebula (the upper, blue portion) and a dark nebula (which accounts for the gaps dividing the nebula into lobes). About 5000 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius.

Third Contact plus 41 Minutes664 viewsThis was my last photo of the 2017 eclipse. The Eclipse Nazis (aka site monitors), not understanding that eclipses don't end at Third Contact, were harassing us to pack up our gear and clear off the site.

Post-Totality 1660 viewsThe Moving Finger writes, and having writ,
Moves on; nor all your piety nor wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a line,
Nor all your tears wash out a word of it.

Messier 90, Spiral Galaxy in Virgo656 views59 million light-years away. Contains little gas and dust and hence does not have much star formation; believed to be evolving into a lenticular galaxy.

Across the silent river gone
And through Arabia the edge
Of evening widen and steal on
