Markarian's Chain502 viewsPart of Markarian's Chain, a group of galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. Visible in the photo are NGCs 4477, 4473, 4461, 4458, 4438 and 4435. Not visible are M84 and M86, which are out of the frame to the right - my telescope's field of view is not big enough to capture them all.

Post-Totality 4496 viewsAt this point I ran out of film, so I didn't make it to Fourth Contact with the post-totality images.

Pre-Totality 6493 viewsAnd Baghdad darken and the bridge
Across the silent river gone
And through Arabia the edge
Of evening widen and steal on

Post-Totality 1491 viewsThe Moving Finger writes, and having writ,
Moves on; nor all your piety nor wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a line,
Nor all your tears wash out a word of it.

Corona Effects490 viewsSome trick of post-capture processing gave the corona a greenish ring. Don't ask me how that happened.

First Contact plus ~20 minutes487 viewsThe Moon is taking a bigger bite out of the Sun.

Messier 24 - "Small" Sagittarius Star Cloud487 viewsMessier 24 is an enormous cloud of stars lying in the Sagittarius arm of our galaxy, at a distance of about 10,000 light years from Earth. It is about 600 light years wide and occupies an area 90 arc minutes in apparent diameter. Among other objects, M24 contains the open cluster NGC 6603, which is at the center of this image. M24 is called the Small Sagittarius Star Cloud because there is another, larger star cloud south of it in Sagittarius, consisting of stars not obscured by the interstellar dust which blocks our view of the center of the galaxy.

NGC 7822 - Star-forming region in Cepheus487 viewsIncludes the emission nebula Sharpless 171 and the star cluster Berkeley 59. Around 3000 light-years from Earth.

NGC 3115 - Lenticular Galaxy in Sextans485 viewsFormerly thought to be an elliptical galaxy, now considered a lenticular (lens-shaped) galaxy because it has a disk and a central bulge of stars, but no discernible spiral structure. Distance from Earth is about 32 million light years. It is several times larger than the Milky Way galaxy.

First Contact484 viewsAt 12:39:58.1, local time, the Moon starts to encroach on the disk of the Sun. Since there is not much to say about partial phase eclipse images, I have captioned them with stanzas from Archibald Macleish's poem "You, Andrew Marvell" - a magical piece which best conveys the awe and wonder of the stunning natural spectacle we know as a total eclipse of the Sun - and, in the case of the post-totality shots, a few verses from other metaphysical works.
