Markarian's Chain253 viewsPart of Markarian's Chain, a group of galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. Visible in the photo are NGCs 4477, 4473, 4461, 4458, 4438 and 4435. Not visible are M84 and M86, which are out of the frame to the right - my telescope's field of view is not big enough to capture them all.

M74, Spiral Galaxy in Pisces252 viewsGrand design spiral galaxy with two clearly defined spiral arms winding counterclockwise from center. About 32 million light-years distant.

The Draco Trio of Galaxies248 viewsThree galaxies in Draco: NGC 5981, edge-on spiral at top; in the middle, elliptical galaxy NGC 5982; bottom, spiral galaxy NGC 5985.

M31 - The Andromeda Galaxy247 viewsA wide-field view of the Andromeda Galaxy, 2.5 million light years away and 152,000 light years in diameter. Satellite galaxies M32 (above right of center, on rim of M31) and M110 (bottom center) also appear in the frame. Red swath at left was caused by a reflection of the red power-on light on the ZWO ASI2600MC camera, which sits in front of the telescope.

Messier 106 and companions246 viewsThe large spiral galaxy at left is M106, lying at a distance of 22 to 25 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Canes Venatici. A myriad of other galaxies are in the frame, of which the two most prominent are NGC 4248 (closest to M106) and NGC 4217 (disk at right).
M59-20230511.jpg
Messier 59, Messier 60 and friends246 viewsM59 is the eilliptical galaxy in the center of the frame; above it is the elliptical galaxy M60 with nearby spiral galaxy NGC 4647. Numerous other galaxies are also in the picture, including spirals NGC4606 and NGC4607 in the bottom left quadrant.

Messier 61 - Face-on Barred Spiral Galaxy in Virgo241 viewsOne of the largest members of the Virgo Cluster, M61 is a starburst galaxy, i.e. it has an unusually high rate of star formation, with an active galactic nucleus that features a massive nuclear star cluster and a supermassive black hole. It is about 53 million light-years away from Earth.
M101-201704.jpg
Messier 101 - The Pinwheel Galaxy239 viewsFace-on spiral galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major. A colossus among galaxies, 170,000 light-years across (Milky Way is 105,700), with a trillion stars. Distance - approx. 25 million light-years from Earth.
M108-20230512-OSC1.jpg
M108 and M97 in one frame238 viewsBarred spiral galaxy M108, nicknamed the Surfboard Galaxy, about 28 million light years away; and planetary nebula M97, the Owl Nebula, 2030 light-years away, both in Ursa Major.
NGC891-20181106.jpg
NGC 891- Silver Sliver Galaxy237 viewsAn edge-on spiral galaxy in Andromeda; about 30 million light-years distant; similar in size to the Milky Way.
M104_20240309_RASA11_NBZ2c.JPG
Messier 104 - The Sombrero Galaxy237 viewsUnique spiral galaxy 31 million light-years from Earth on the border of the constellations Virgo and Corvus. It has a bright nucleus, an unusually large central bulge, and a prominent dust lane in its outer disk.
NGC6946-20160830.jpg
NGC 6946 - The Fireworks Galaxy236 viewsA face-on spiral galaxy in the constellation Cepheus, near its border with Cygnus, about 1/3 to 1/2 as big as the Milky Way, but with a high rate of star formation, making it a spectacular starburst galaxy. About 25 million light-years from Earth and 40,000 light-years in diameter.
